Our History
Middletown has a rich history rooted in early settlement, agriculture, and community resilience.
The area that is now Middletown was originally part of large Spanish land grants. In the mid-1800s, settlers began establishing what would become the town, which grew as a key stop along the route between Calistoga and Lower Lake.
During this time, Middletown became known not only as a travel route, but also for its natural mineral springs and healing waters. Visitors traveled from across Northern California to experience the restorative properties of these geothermal waters, leading to the development of early resorts and wellness destinations in the area.
Early industries such as mining, ranching, and agriculture helped shape the local economy and community, while the surrounding landscape continued to attract visitors seeking both opportunity and relaxation.
Over time, the community continued to evolve, including the development of geothermal energy in the surrounding mountains, which remains an important part of the region today.
Middletown has also faced challenges, including major wildfires such as the Valley Fire in 2015. Through it all, the community has shown strength, rebuilding and continuing to grow together.
Today, Middletown is a place where history, natural beauty, and a spirit of resilience come together—a community shaped by its past and strengthened by the people who call it home.
